NASA, Xerox, Team On Voice Recognition In Space
With thousands of tasks on hand for astronauts, a voice recognitions system can be of tremendous help.
The space agency has a few bugs to work out of the system first. In testing, the voice recognition system had an error rate of ten percent, far too high for potential use in space. After collaborating with Xerox, they've lowered the error rate to only five percent.

Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), an independent administrative institution, has developed a speech recognition function in real environment using an array of microphones, successfully extending the sensing capability of humanoid robot under the Humanoid Robotic Project HRP-2 "Prométhée".

Samsung Phone Combines Bluetooth, Voice Recognition
Samsung said Wednesday that a new phone it is releasing combines Bluetooth with voice recognition enabling users to send and receive calls without touching the phone.
The company said its new SGH-E620 phone will be sold in Europe. To make calls, the user speaks the person's name and the system automatically searches the phone book and makes the call. The Bluetooth element means that, unlike other phones with voice recognition, the phone need not be put to the user's ear to make calls.

Paisley company Voice Technologies has teamed up with Glasgow School of Art's Digital Design Studio to develop what it claims is a ground-breaking speech recognition system for the healthcare sector.
Voice Messenger enables doctors to access and use their hospital's reporting system from anywhere in the world over a web browser. Using SpeechMagic technology from Philips, medics can dictate directly into letters, forms or reports and convert to text in real time.

Voice-recognition software has been used for some time now by many of Australia's best-known companies - including Telstra, Qantas, Vodafone and the Australian Taxation Office.
But it has had more than the usual teething problems that beset new technology in allowing for the human factor - unpredictable at best - which includes accents, intonation and speech clarity.
